Meetup #5: Conversational Journalism with RAG Systems

The fifth AI for Media Meetup will address the question of how media organizations can enhance the accessibility of their content through RAG systems. The event will take place on September 25, 2025, at WDR in Cologne.

Currently, many media outlets are leveraging RAG systems to make their content more accessible to users through AI. Users ask questions, AI chatbots respond—utilizing RAG systems in the process. Therefore, we have themed Meetup #5 as “Conversational Journalism with RAG Systems.”

The kick-off of the event will be a welcome greeting from WDR Director-General Katrin Vernau.

The keynote “Critical Nodes in the Network: AI Agents as Information Mediators and What They Mean for Journalism” will be presented by Christina Elmer, Professor of Digital Journalism and Data Journalism at TU Dortmund.

Franziska Hellmundt from WDR will explain how to build a RAG system.

Julius Sandmann from Badische Neueste Nachrichten will discuss how RAG systems have transformed research and content creation at BNN.

Yannick Franke, AI Team Lead at dpa, presents dpa-Recherche, a RAG system that can be queried about all dpa reports since 2020.

The additional speakers will be announced soon!

You will find the detailed agenda here. All spots for in-person attendance are taken. You are welcome to register for online participation via Teams on September 25 using this form.
